Dr. Quirino Lai, researcher at the Transplant Center of the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, was awarded the prestigious Rising Star Award at the Congress of the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS), which was held in Istanbul from 4 to 7 May 2022.
The award was recognized for an international study involving thousands of patients from different Europeans, Asians and North Americans, aimed at the role of living liver transplantation in the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The use of living donation can improve outcomes in these patients, minimizing the risk of leaving the waiting list due to progression of the tumor pathology.
The coveted award is an acknowledgment to the entire Liver Transplant Unit of the Policlinico Umberto I, directed by Prof. Massimo Rossi, who this year celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the first liver transplant performed in Italy in 1982.
